Research Opportunities
Undergraduate research is actively encouraged in the Department of Environmental Sciences. Interested students may begin as early as the second semester of their freshmen year exploring research with faculty in the department.
Students considering careers in research who are seeking an intensive, structured, and progressive research experience should consider the ENVS:
- 299R,
- 399R,
- 499R research sequence (or ENVS 495: Honors Research).
Students who discover their interest in research later in their undergraduate careers may explore ENVS 494: Individual Research as upperclassmen.
Explore areas of research in ENVS:
- Any student interested in research should begin by identifying an ENVS faculty member whose academic background and research experience is of interest.
- Once an area of research is identified, students will need to communicate directly with the ENVS faculty member to explore potential research projects.
Explore resources for conducting research in ENVS:
Please contact the ENVS departmental librarian, Kristan Majors if you are curious about how to get the most out of your research experience. Kristan can assist in the following areas:
- brainstorm potential topics
- learn more about research in general
- developing research questions
- preparing for a meeting with faculty
ENVS faculty research disciplines include:
Ecology and Conservation | Environmental Policy | Sustainability and Development | Urban Environment |
Disease Ecology and Global Health | Resource Management | Earth and Atmospheric Sciences | Geography and Spatial Sciences |
Opportunities for funding
Once you have met with your faculty research mentor and are ready to get started on an undergraduate research project, ask your mentor about the department's opportunities for funding, through the Lester grant or the Turner grant, as well as additional resources available through Emory College.
