My research integrates social and environmental data to understand the distributional consequences of changing climate on humans and the environment. I rely heavily on geospatial programming and analysis, but also integrate survey and qualitative data in my research. I am interested in methodological approaches that merge “big” spatiotemporal data with “deep” qualitative data to understand and support socio-environmental sustainability.

The Burchfield lab is currently focused on the future food and water security of the United States. Ongoing projects include (1) modeling the impact of shifting land use on agricultural production, (2) projecting future agricultural land use under changing climate, (3) determining the shared characteristics of productive and resilient agricultural systems, and (4) identifying the multiscalar drivers of farm-level cultivation and conservation behavior.
