4+1 BS/MPH


The Department of Environmental Sciences and the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health in Rollins School of Public Health collaboratively offer this  4+1 degree program. Students accepted to the program will have the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Emory College in Environmental Sciences and a Master of Public Health degree in Environmental Health in five years.

Rollins School of Public Health


Students will take courses at Emory College as BS/Environmental Sciences majors while also taking graduate-level public health courses. Students are expected to have a foundation in chemistry and biology prior to full matriculation in the Rollins School of Public Health.

GPA and Courses to Complete Prior to Application

Cumulative Grade Point Average

Students applying to the program must be sophomore or junior Environmental Sciences (BS) majors with a cumulative grade point average at the time of admission of 3.25 or higher.

Students must maintain at least the 3.25 overall grade point average through the completion of their undergraduate degree.

Progress Toward ENVS BS Degree

Students will need to have completed

  • ENVS 130: Environmental Sciences or ENVS 140: Environmental Change & Health
  • ENVS 131: Intro. to ENVS Field Studies OR OX_ENVS 131 (Oxford)

Additionally, at least two courses within the ENVS Intermediate Breadth Requirements (Ecology & Conservation, Earth Science or Social Science & Policy or Oxford equivalents).

Enrollment in one of the ENVS methods courses (ENVS 260, ENVS 270 or ENVS 250) is also recommended. See ENVS Course Descriptions for more detailed course information. 

Rollins Undergraduate Course Requirements

While not required prior to application, at least one semester of college-level biology and chemistry are required - BS/MPH students can take these after they are admitted.

How do I apply?

Applicants are accepted primarily on the basis of performance and promise as Emory College or Oxford College undergraduate students.

Students traditionally apply in the spring of their sophomore or junior year. Applications are accepted in early in the fall and spring semester of each year (typically in the first week of October and February). Summer applications are considered, please contact Leah Thomas for details.

  • One-page Statement of Purpose

    In one page, outline your personal objectives and goals for this program. Describe your academic background and strengths and personal experiences that influence your interest in the ENVS BS/ EH MPH 4+1 program. Include related research, work, and/or internships.

  • Letters of Recommendation

    Two letters of recommendation. One recommendation letter must be from a current ENVS (or Oxford College) professor.
