4+1 BA/MS or BS/MS

When to Apply

Undergraduate students in Emory College, in either a BA or BS program, are eligible to apply. Accepted students would complete their undergraduate degree in Emory College and the Master of Science (M.S.) in Environmental Sciences in Emory’s Laney Graduate School in five years.

Students may apply for admission as early as the spring of their second (Sophomore) year or as late as the end of their third (Junior) year.

Applicants must be undergraduate majors in Emory College or Oxford College and will be admitted to the program on the basis of academic performance, interest area, and experience.

Accepted students participate in research-oriented training in both the natural and social sciences to address the complex scientific and societal issues of environmental science. Students engage in rigorous research in their area of specialty and will produce an original thesis based on their research. By the completion of the MS program, students will be prepared for continuing their research in a PhD program or using their degree as a terminal degree, having received preparation for employment across the spectrum of professional opportunities - governmental, non-governmental, non-profit, etc.

Applicant Requirements

Prospective Students

Prospective students must communicate directly with the ENVS faculty member whose research most closely aligns with the student's area of research interest. We welcome applicants from across Emory College in either a BA or BS program of study.

The ENVS faculty member will be consulted in any admissions decision about their willingness to serve as the faculty advisor.

Cumulative Grade Point Average

A cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher will be required at the time of admission and maintained through the completion of the undergraduate degree.

Application Requirements

Students enrolling in the program are expected to have completed:

  • QTM 100
  • 200 level ENVS quantitative methods course (or other 200 level QTM course with the approval of the student's ENVS faculty advisor
  • four (4) courses at the 200 level or above approved by the ENVS faculty research advisor that will advance the student's preparation for the research thesis
  • ENVS 399: Introduction to Independent Research (3 credits)
  • Support of the ENVS faculty research advisor

Undergraduate Academic Advisor

To strategically plan an academic program that will meet all undergraduate requirements and allow time for the required courses in the 5-year program, students will work with their undergraduate academic advisor as early as the first semester of their second year.

CURRICULUM

The 4+1 BA or BS/MS offers students an in-depth understanding of the complexities of scientific evidence in both the natural and social sciences within a curriculum that integrates people and the environment.

Students accepted into the program, take courses in Emory College of Arts and Sciences while concurrently taking graduate-level courses in Laney Graduate School. Students are required to take courses in research design and practice, advanced statistics, natural sciences, environmental policy, and integration of science and policy.

MS in ENVS Requirements

  • Graduate Courses

A student must take at least 17 credit hours as follows:

    • Quantitative Skills (6-7 credit hours): two courses
    • Natural Science (3 credit hours): one course
    • Environmental Policy (3 credit hours): one course
    • Science/Policy Integration (3 credit hours): one course (ENVS 521 or ENVS 526)
    • Graduate Seminar (2 credit hours): ENVS 590
  • Graduate Level Elective Courses

Students must take at least 9 credit hours of elective graduate-level coursework.  We envision that students will concentrate electives in a particular application area in order to add depth to their program, in consultation with their advisor.
  • Research

Research is an integral part of the master's program. Students will conduct independent research in preparation for the thesis. Students often complete significant research the summer between their fourth and fifth year of study.
  • Thesis

A thesis is a requirement.  A Master’s thesis must be presented to, and approved by a committee of graduate faculty. The thesis committee will be comprised of three members of the Laney Graduate School Faculty, one of whom will be the ENVS faculty advsior. Students may petition the DGS to add an outside member from Emory or from other institutions. The thesis will be completed and defended during the last semester. Students are expected to register for at least 9 hours of thesis writing (ENVS 599R).
  • Advising

Each student will work with an ENVS faculty advisor to assist them in choosing a research project, selecting electives and to guide them through their entire course of studies.
